What does a Quality Reviewer do?

Quality Reviewers play a vital role in ensuring that every tax return prepared is accurate, compliant with tax laws, and error-free. As a Quality Reviewer, you will:

  • Ensure Accuracy: Review tax returns prepared by other volunteers to confirm that tax law has been applied correctly.

  • Prevent Errors: Use tools like Form 13614-C (intake sheet), tax payer interviews, and supporting documents to catch potential mistakes before they're submitted to the IRS.

  • Collaborate & Mentor: Work closely with volunteer preparers to explain any necessary corrections and provide guidance on tax law, creating a learning opportunity for everyone involved.

Why become a Quality Reviewer?

Not sure if it's for you? Here are a few reasons to become a Quality Reviewer:

  • Growing Demand: Each year, we have hundreds of volunteer tax preparers, but only a handful of them will go on to become Quality Reviewers. This creates a bottleneck, with lots of returns waiting to be QR'd but not enough people to review them! Help us cut down wait times and create a better experience for our clients.  

  • Deepen Your Tax Knowledge: Who doesn't like a challenge? Quality Reviewers will learn the ins and outs of a tax return, including how to understand a 1040 and explain complicated tax situations to clients. You'll be prepared for anything!

  • Leadership Experience: As a Quality Reviewer, you'll guide and mentor other volunteers, helping them grow in their roles. This mentorship experience can be valuable for both personal and professional development, making your volunteer service all the more rewarding!

Sounds great! How do I become a QR All Star?

QR All Stars must meet the following requirements and complete the steps below:

  1. Must be certified as an Advanced Tax Preparer.

  2. Watch our QR training video.

  3. Complete our QR All Stars exam (25 questions) and score at least an 80% 

  4. Upload your exam certificate to the "Qualifications" section of your portal profile under "Quality Review All Stars Test".

  5. Complete 2-3 hours of QR shadowing with the Site Manager at your tax site using the Quality Review Checklist aka the QR All Stars "cheatsheet".

  6. Begin signing up for Quality Review volunteer shifts!
